so i started my car,and then i heard a loud pop, so i started to back out then i realized i couldnt turn my wheel and my ac didnt work. so i popped the hood and i noticed that the alternator had snapped the bracket it was bolted onto, but the belt is still all in one piece.
Can someone tell me what the name and where i can find that bracket? thx for the help...

Phillip,
The quickest and cheapest way would be finding an Alero, Grand Am, or any N-Body with the same engine you have, at a junk yard. After that, if you need it ASAP, GM parts (either they have it, or 1-2 days shipped in).
Hope this helps.

would i rather buy a new bracket instead of getting one that has been used? also what would cause that bracket to snap, or is it just another thing that can go wrong on the alero?

Its not too common of a problem actually, that's the first time I heard it. If the piece is in good condition (Ie., no rust, or any deterioration on it), I would suggest going for it.

could the mechanic who just worked on my car had screwed it up? cause i just had to have my whole top end of my motor rebuilt,( heads machined, lifters etc)

if he installed a new belt it sounds like maybe he put one on that was too small.

that is pretty impressive that it managed to snap the bracket.

yeah my gas mileage was shitty it went from 300 or so per tank to a lil below 200 per tank, and i called the mechanics shop , and they had said that they had fixed a gas leak and that she didnt know what to tell me. She said i might need to go get my computer reset, so im pretty pissed about that also, its like it was running REALLY rich, or that it is dumping way to much fuel into the engine, because when i floor it it doesnt accelerate as quick as it should have, and it like hesitated when i get to a certain point

i dont think he put a new belt on because im sure he would have charged me for it on the invoice, but then again he charged me for a coolant cap and didnt give it to me.

Quite possible you might want to get it checked by someone else. The junk yard would be alot cheaper than new. It's not a wear item under normal circumstances.

so what should i do about my gas milage? next time my car is working, im gonna put some fuel injector cleaner in it, but i mean it has to be somethin besidesthat to cause 100 mile difference

Its possible that you mech overtighted the bolts that hold that bracket on and cracked it, then over time it totally just took a shit.

You didn't have a pully lock up did you? I wouldn't think it would put that much pressure on it though, usually the belt will still spin till it breaks.

Have you noticed that the front of the car was shaking somewhat above normal lately? That sure looks like an extremely clean break on all edges.

no didnt notice any shanking, but like i said i hadnt had my car for a long time then i just got it back for a week and then this happened, my friends dad said on one of the breaks looks like it had a crack on one side cause he said it looked like it had built up a lil grease

well now i got a new piece and the belt back on now it works again, so now im back to my other problem concerning why the gas mileage would be so horrible

try to drive it steady and constant for two full fillups if possible and compare.

im thinking that for some reason its running extremly rich, cause when i floor it i guess it bogs down? i accelerate better if i dont floor it, i dont know if its anything to do with somethin the mechanic did cause he changed my spark plugs and wires i believe, but that shouldnt cause that significant of a change in gas mileage should it? i mean if anything it shoulda gave me better gas mileage, he also replaced my cat if that matters, i dont think its the EGR valve cause i changed that within the last 5000 miles, also the fuel filter within the last 2000, today i put fuel injector cleaner in it so ill see if that helps any,

O2 sensor?

No, it's working just not reading 100% accurate.

so how many o2 sensors aleros got 1 or 2? could it also be that since they put a new cat on they shoulda changed my o2 sensor if there is one on that or leading to it?

You could pull your battery cables and let everything reset and see what happens.
dtldiaspora
11-04-2007, 12:38 AM
how long should i let it sit without the cable about 10 mins?

I have heard 10 mins but longer wouldn't hurt anything

it seems strange the mechanic had no answer for you, did he even want to try to diagnose the problem? i had a bonneville 3.8 and had the same problem when i got it from the garage, the first thing i did was pull the plugs and re-gapped them, made an instant difference, wouldn't hurt to reset the ecm by disconnecting the battery, i have had to leave it for 30 min. before it reset in the past.
good-luck

also run some sea foam in your car too.. That stuff does wonders! If anything, get your gas lines checked by someone else.... don't go back to the same people who fixed it before....

Sounds to me like you don't really know what your mech did..... lol

no i know what he did, hell i even got the piece of paper sayin what he did, but today i went to my friends house and her dad put his computer on it and what do ya know he was able to read the codes my car was throwing and even tried to clear them, but they came back, which the codes came back that my o2 sensors were malfunctioning, so my mech is either got stupid people working for him or he just didnt wanna fuck with it either way im not to happy with the whole situation.
and turns out the new valve cover gaskets that he just put on are already leaking, so i get to take it back to him tomorrow and tell him he has to fix it not to mention my intake gasket might be leaking also, so tomorrow should be fun!
