I took my car in to the mechanic to have him tell me why it wasn't starting sometimes (no security light) and he checked out my squeaking belt while he was at it. This has been squeaking since I got my engine rebuilt last December. I've put belt dressing on it and it only helps for a minute or two, plus the belt was replaced last October or so, so it's not the belt. The mechanic said he took the belt off and spun everything by hand to see what squeaked. He said the crankshaft pulley was squeaking and the alternator was making a little noise. Said I should replace both of them.
First, does that sound reasonable? Has anyone else had to replace their crankshaft pulley because it was squeaking?
If I am going to replace it, I cannot find a stock one anywhere and am looking at underdrive or lightweight pulleys. Apparently FFP doesn't sell one anymore, but I found this one from MRZ: <http://mrzperformance.vstore.ca/product_info.php/cPath/23_25_39/products_id/96>. I know there is also the RSM lightweight normal size pulley, but it costs about $35 more. I guess some people have had oil leaks from FFP pulleys and MRZ claims to fix the problem, but has anyone had oil leaks with the RSM pulley? I am not sure whether or not I want an underdrive pulley. Won't it make my engine get hotter while I'm sitting at traffic lights? I don't want to take a risk of overheating since the last time that happened it cost me 3 grand.
As far as the alternator, I think Advance Auto will test it for me, whenever I can get there. If it can still handle the load I won't replace it. If the noise indicates that it might be going, will an underdrive pulley make it go bad faster?
