Gas Gauge

its that time again for my stupid questions heh.. Well i was trying to figure my gas mileage per tank, so ive been watching the gauge a lot. Filled the tank, reset the trip and all that fun stuff and for about... 75-100 miles it was sticking to full then it slowly began to dip under F and after 3/4full mark it began to move really fast toward E. Is this a flaw in the gauge, screwed up sensor, idiot rambling?

It's a typical fuel gauge. The best are digital fuel gauges because they give a gallon by gallon mark.

The only thing you should always remember about fuel gauges is that the top half always SEEMS to last longer.

heh.. for the first 50 miles i was like.. damn... this thing gets better mileage than i thought... then bam... the speed of it goin down was exponential and i got sad -_-

digital gauge.. just a question on cost and if they go right in where the normal gauge goes.. and ease of installation?

and to the idiot rambling, i do that a lot and question a lot of stupid things.. if i do it too much lemme know heh..

the top half at most i have seen was ~200 then plunging quicker then the stock market during the depression.

ok...134 miles and it just dipped below half... so im assuming at the rate its going now im gonna get 200mi per tank... which makes me sad...

If its the same as mine, you'll run a LONG time on empty. Its really screwed up. If they made a direct digital replacement, i'd be all over it.

that is the way the "reserve woprks... your gas guage will stay at full for a while... then start to register your fuel useage... well when it gets to E... it sets off the chime so you remember to get gas... but it still has the reserve much like the area at the top... say you have a scale from 0 to 100... (100 being full) well your gas gauge reads more like 15 to 85... so theres a little at each end...

I consistently go 600kms (372.822 miles) on a tank with my 4cyl 5 speed mostly highway driving.

I've gone 20 or 30 kms over that but I live pretty far from stations so when I hit 600 it's time to fill up.

I have a 01 buick regal that does the same thing. The first half seems to last longer than the second half. I think it's the shape of the tank so a digital guage won't help, it's the speed that the float goes down when you use the fuel.

The Buick has a "range" option on the dash. I think it calculates your mpg and estimates how far you can go. thats seems to make a bit more sense.

When i drive on the highway i get about 28-30mpg

i have a 2001 alero 2.4L had the fuel reg. replaced last week because i was only getting about 172mile off a tank of gas driving in town

drove up north got about 260 mile off 3/4 of a tank.....so i'm thinking i only getting about 22mpg highway miles and getting about 17 in town.....

anyone have an idea what tis might be ..... i have had the injectors cleaned out replaced the fuel filter and even took out the k.n air cleaner...and got a tune up done less than 6 months ago...
i have 72.000 miles on the car

If your saying that your fuel gauge is reading wrong its probably your sending unit.

right now in the winter with my 3400 I'm getting 200, 250 if I'm lucky miles to the tank. In the summer its up to 350ish. stupid winter gas mix. My dads normaly around 400 in the summer 300 to 250 in the winter with his 2.2l grand am.

have an appointment tomorrow to get it checked out that and the voice comands for the door and the tire pressure....thinking it's a relay not to shure on the newer cars.....good thing it is happening now because warranty runs out in about 2,000 miles

It's a poor fuel gague calibration. OEMs think that people want to see it that way and feel better about their fuel economy. I personally hate my car lying to me.
Just reset and watch the trip odo. In my 3400 I had to get gas at 300 miles in winter or I was in danger of running out (I had a 70 mile round trip to/from work).
