View Full Version : My Turbo Alero Update!!!

Alrighty here, for anyone who is interested or curious on how Project Mayhem is going, here we go!

Situation:
For those that don't know, had Turbo on car for about 4 months, sometimes ran great sometimes it didn’t run great (don't ask times cause never had a chance to), it was just a matter or tweaking on it. Once day noticed the oil pressure gauge flickering, checked connection and it was all good. Then another day saw a 3rd gen FD (see who figures this one out!), started out rolling at about 15mph, got up to about 105mph, we were pretty much dead even, he did have about a hood on me though, regardless I was extremely happy!!! But then got to the light and noticed my oil pressure gauge was flickering like crazy, rolled down the window heard a ticking noise from the engine, augh sh#t that’s not good! Assumption, threw a rod bearing, parked car for the winter, school kept me busy.

Results:
Well after tearing the motor out of my car noticed a couple things, cracked downpipe, torn rear tranny/motor mount. The motor itself was in pretty good condition, pulled the oil pan, noticed what looked like aluminum shards, get the head off, and all other stuff. Pull the pistons and con rods, checked all the rod bearings, well just as suspected, except it was greater, threw 3 rod bearings!!! The crank was slightly damaged but nothing really big, took it to a local machine shop, balance/polish/grind/champher’d oil journals.

To do Next:
So once crank comes back, put back together with new parts, bigger and better parts. Oh yeah I also filled in the tranny/motor mounts with polyurethane caulk, seems to work pretty well can’t really tell until I put it back in, my cousin did it on his neon and said he noticed a difference, well considering it was only a $15 mod, it most likely worth it!

I’ve been pretty busy so I don’t post too much, so sorry bout this rather long post, I do regularly check the forum just don’t post unless necessary. If you have questions ask cause unfortunately there aren’t too many turbo'd alero’s out there so maybe this can spark some idea!

That sucks. Keep us informed of your progress.

One question, though: what's the polyurethane caulking supposed to do for you in the motor mounts?

Yeah the tranny has 2 circular mounts, they have gaps in them (that allows for some movement), so when you fill in the gaps with the polyurethane caulk it helps to stiffen it. After filling it in & playing with it, pushing it and moving the center section around i did notice a difference in the movement. Considering that nobody sells inserts or new mounts that could werk, this was the best option.

also if any of you guys got the new RKsport catalog, you will notice the upper and lower motor mount for the grandam. The upper specificly for the 2.4, i had ordered that a while back but as suspected they don't fit! maybe its cause i have a 2.4 but i highly doubt it cause when i went to look up parts numbers for the upper mount the manual and auto number were the same.

rk never bothered to test the mount on the ga or alero. they jsut assumed the J and n-body use the same upper engine mount

yeah its bull cause i called them out on it, but just told me that it would work for some alero and not for some aleros!

hey, get me some on the caulk. i'm sure this will be needed for mine.

would that only work for the tranny mount?

I know that RSM USA is looking into mounts for our cars, 2.4 that is, hopefully something good comes of it.

the caulk is some 3M caulk that i think they use to seal windshields, got it at a local NAPA's. i got the idea from reading i think Sport Compact Car or Super Street. I figured that i had already torn the mount apart at 6psi, i could only imagine what would happen at 15psi!!! So this trick should do something! The magazine guys agree that it did do something as well.

it seems that it would only work on the tranny mounts cause, the upper is a rectangular shaped one where there are no holes or gaps to fill in, only the front and rear tranny mounts will work cause they are of the circular form. The "lower" motor mount, the one by the wheel, on the other end of the tranny, no way cause it just like the upper. As for the rksport one, not even close! I'll take pictures and post them and let you guys see for yourselves.

also i will get the caulk part number for anyone who is interested. one more thing, doing it is really not all that hard, takes a bit of time but again not hard.

All 3rd Gen RX-7's VIN numbers begin with "FD"

Ah so it's an elitist thing... otherwise it'd just be called a 3rd gen RX-7 :P

So you (barely) lost to a ~255HP and a ~2900lb car? Hey that's pretty damn good... how much boost pressure were you running?

The dude in the FD probably thought you would be an easy kill, good for you on proving him wrong!! Too bad about the motor though, I've seen some other posts here with people loosing their motors to nitrous too.
What type of muffler is that you have?

04-15-2004, 07:30 PM
you can also buy flowable urathane pretty cheap and fill them that way
thats what I did.
rsm wants waaaaaaayyy too much for their mounts

04-15-2004, 09:42 PM
sorry Final, kinda guess i'm in my Initial D (jap drift racing anime) kinda faze. Here how about these, a.) 34 or b.) 86? c.) FC? d.) EG d.) EK? There you go! :)

Trust me Final i was probably more shocked then the guy in the RX! I couldn't stop just giggling and smiling, even when i figured i threw my rod bearing, it was all worth it!

As for muffler, its just the Magnaflow 6" series, not sure what model, but it is a double walled.

Forget RSM, they sold the Specific "alero" mount, not even close! oh well.

good news though, just got the call bout my crank, all good, can use standard bearing sizes, just ordered the Clevite 77's from NAPA, cheapest and available, also just ordered a bunch of Felpro gaskets, screw GM, they just wanted waay way too much! plus what i heard the Felpro are the best anyhow.

Hey John, how much power you pushing now? kinda have to have someone to shoot at and number to shoot for! :D

Oldsman
04-15-2004, 11:12 PM
hey tony, would the caulk work on only the tranny mount?

probably have to pull the mounts off to do it too.

nguyen187
04-19-2004, 05:05 PM
Olds - Regardless of which mount you do you wanna take them out cause the mount is under a load so if you caulked them in it wouldn't be centered, kinda confusing but look at the photos, as for the motor mount iteself, there is technically only 1, that would be the upper, the "lower" really is connected to the tranny, which then is connected to the motor itself. Also pulling out the mounts themselves are not all that hard, just time consuming.

still waiting on the shop for the stupid crank, apparently when they turned it they somehow "forgot" to balance it!!!! so it was suppose to be ready by monday, but now it just got delayed til wednesday! oh well

Oldsman
04-19-2004, 10:39 PM
that sucks. hope they do it right.

will have to talk to you about getting those mounts when i am ready.

I'll be upping the antie as cash allows.
first manual trans.
then motor build
then boost returns to the car.
nitrous is not leaving
expect 400+ without nitrous.
time for an alero to really be "fast" :D

Well at least we have some better numbers to shoot for now! Only a matter of time before its a race to 1000hp (not near future but its possible perhaps?)

nguyen187
04-22-2004, 12:36 AM
yeah 1000hp not for me anytime soon, just getting the damn motor running is running me broke! but yeah 400 is definately somewhere in the future i hope!

seriously, this whole car thing just a money pit!!! oh well gotta do sumpthing with the money.

I do have to admit though, sounds kinda stupid and all, but i'm actually am a bit intimidated by the stupid SRT-4's!!!! maybe its cause i've never actually ran one, i mean i read on one of there forums that there is a guy doing 520+whp on stock internals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats maybe why! damn neons!

I saw a video of a guy with a stock bottom end SRT-4 pushin about that much HP blow his motor.... still though they can reach low 11's with the stock bottom end... yeah that's damn impressive.

250hp and 11's? that guy must be light as hell and know how to drive on big meats.

lol that aint right, no car can run 11's on 250 horses, old crx's with 250 to the wheels would have the closest shot, it takes a lot to make 11's..........its a dream for all of us lol

Final-Reality
04-24-2004, 06:04 PM
Nooo no no... stock BOTTOM END... if I remember correctly, it actually had a stock motor completely, just a lot of boost. Stock cams, head, pistons/rods etc etc... but like I said.. they were shooting for 10's that day but they blew the engine... I have a vid of it somewhere hold on...

Here we go:
http://forums.clubsi.com/showflat.php?Cat=...sb=5&o=&fpart=1 (http://forums.clubsi.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB4&Number=3971145&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)

There's a link to the video in that thread, but it's down now, I have it and it's pretty funny :P

nguyen187
04-25-2004, 02:20 AM
yeah not sure what that SRT-4 did, but the motor itself is purely stock, he did upgrade the manifold so that a t3/t4e could be fitted! ITs just insane of a vehicle.

anyways, decided to stay in tonight, last night was pretty rough, got the crank, reinstalled it with the Clevite 77 bearings. All good, then tried to put together the conrods and pistons, but the main/wrist pins from Wiseco did not fit the opening on the Eagle Rods!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF! pulled out the caliper, and the pins were either too big or the Eagle rods opening is too small, either way not to sure what to do. Thinking bout calling both companies first, then if nothing works out, taking it to a machine shop to get the connecting rods pins opening bored out!!!!!!!!

After that i did mount the intercooler, looks nice, just gotta get a couple L-brackets welded on the bottom side. Check out the link to see the photos.

Final-Reality
04-25-2004, 11:44 AM
That's sort of strange considering I don't think the piston pin size ever changed on the TwinCam.. wiseco probably sent you the wrong pins considering the rods fit on the main journals so they're probably the correct size..

nguyen187
05-07-2004, 12:16 AM
ok for those that still care,
got the wrist pins and rods back, had to get them honed just a wee bit! cost $20, not too bad! Put them in last night, got the intercooler brackets welded on and fully mounted. Just finished with finals, that's whats been holding me back. drinking and celebrating will take up the rest of the week, oh yeah the Pistons on friday, so maybe back to the car on Sunday, we'll see.

Hey Olds, remember the guy i was telling you bout that was doing the 086 head swap locally, we'll the guys car is up and running, he posted results on the Jbody forum, i think his screen name is JUD, it should be under boost! Impressive, Really Impressive!!!

sounds like your having fun.
I'm building a 2.4L for a customer
ran a quart and a half low on oil and it took out the rod bearings.
we just dropped it off with the machinest on monday.
tons of fun things in store.
just wish his car was a manual :(

nguyen I saw that post in the boost section on jbod... pretty impressive indeed! Only 15psi of boost and he's making like 360HP? Very nice... he's using the W-41 cams too...

I should be far behind him when i get this thing done.
