Load Resistor kits

I thought of this from joserivas19 question that he just posted...

i know what they are used for, and where to get them... but what are they?

If its just a self contained wirewound ceramic resistor, i might have those at my job... and it'd certainly be cheaper to get there.

So what are these kits? what specifically is in the "kit" ? (besides wire splices...) what type of resistor is that, in the metal case?

its for LED turn signals..

Your car expects a certain resistance so that it can detect a burnt bulb

Then it flashes quickly..

LED signals also do this accidentaly, they have different resistance that makes alot of cars think they are burnt out and then your signals blink really fast..

load resistors fix this.. thats it .. thats all..

They are put IN line with the LED signals


3 watt resistors do the same thing.. there are many other ways of making one..

I believe it is a very low Ohm.. around below 100 ohm 3 watt minimal..

so all i need is a high wattage, low ohmage inline resistor? (cerment type i'm guessing)

yes.. but I do remember reading there is a specific ohm you want.. I just forget where I read it..

I would start with 5 watts actuallynow that I did the math..

and large hand wound ones are ideal..

You should google it..

i guess the best way would be to test out the ones i have at work... set up the, leds.. run the wires and see how they work.

They have them on the shelf at Autozone next to the LED bulbs.

I just bought a set of 6 ohm 10 watt resistors.

I did a little research at work, and found we do carry "load resistor kits" in stock. Its just a ceramic resistor, high wattage, low ohms. I tested them, myself, and they do in fact work.

Catalog 274.0120 They run about $3 each.

any radioshack carries these, and if they don't have them in stock, they can order them, free of any shipping charge...

i just called radio shack and the correct part number is 271-120. up here in WA it runs about 2.29

271.120 is the same as 271.0120 in the Radioshack Computer system... (can even see the stock number in the top left corner of the pic)

i would know...i spend 40hrs a week at the damn thing. :lol:

oh ok. my bad. its that i called one here in bremerton, wa and they told me that that part number didnt exist and then he checked and said that it didnt have the 0 in there. thats why i wrote that. sorry bro. :( but yeah, i just got them and wired them. they work like a charm. thanks.:coolio:

you can get 20 watt 8 ohm resistor from here That work fine for $.69 ea or $.58 ea if you buy 10 or more. I bought ten not sure if i had to do my break lights so i can get back my cruz and so far i have 4 installed for my turns and they work great but still no cruz. it was like $10 and some change to get them shipped!

tail lights you don't have to worry, it is only the turn signals that are effected.

It was really random that I came across this thread in the "new post" section because i am about to add some LED's to my turnsignals. I now know that i need to get some sort of load resistor whether it be from radioshack or somewhere else. My question is, do i use this load resistor along with the 470 ohm resistor that you normally use to protect the LED's from the 12V interior mods?

well me flshers were fine until i shaved my tails and put 2 10 in led strips in and my turn flashed really fast now they said in the instructions that u would need to switch to a electrontic flasher. my buddys s10 does the same thing.
so can we buy the 5 buck electronic flasher relay or what ever

or just use one of these load resistors. you use it to bridge your power and ground connection (similar to the filament of the bulb) it gives the line alot more draw, simulating the higher wattage bulb.

but be careful where you mount it. it will heat up.

I have been searching around, havent been able to find out what relay it is we use for the LED tails, does anyone know? I'm trying to buy one so i can get my cruise control and hyper blinking fixed.

The FLASHER RELAY, often times if cars computers sense a problem your cruise control doesnt work, like when i have low brake fluid my cruise doesnt work. Well it is sensing my led lights are "Bad Bulbs" so my turn signals blink fast and it is preventing my Cruise control to work. The question i am asking is not what load resistor to get, i have too many bulbs that are LED's for that. I am asking what is the relay that controls the turn signals. if thats any better.

im not sure there is a relay. I think its all just done by the flasher unit in the hazard module.

The flasher is integrated into the hazard switch, After looking at the diagram a while back, it is possible to wire in a standard off the shelf one though.

okay yes you do need them for your brakes as well and you will get cruise and ABS back!! i just overcame the same problem lastweek!! but i used 50W ones from superbrightled.com
