Backup lights not working

I have recently noticed my backup lights on my 2001 Alero 2.4 5spd are not working when I shift my car into reverse. I have changed the backup lights and checked the backup light fuse under the hood.

A mechanic I know recently adjusted my gear shifter assembly to allow me to take my key out of the ignition without putting my car in reverse. Does anyone think this could be causing the problem.

the back up light switch is located on the transmission itself. It's possible that the adjustment of the shifter is causing it not to completely go in reverse.
