Well today I took my alero in to get inspected. I thought my brakes were messed up but apparentlly im in need of a new rack and pinon. I belive this is also called a stearing rack, though I had one put in under warrenty when I got the car at 50k miles. Now it has 97,000 and the rack is shot again. The shop gave me an estimate of $700 to fix it. Does anyone know where I could buy the part for less that $350? I know a guy that can put it in for me very resonalble. If you could help or give me any suggestions let me kno. Why would my rack and pinon go bad. . . again??? I don't really beat the hell out of my alero. Thanks, corey.

I'm not sure what makes them go out, but I know my old car had it go out at 30K, got it replaced by the place that put a sticker on it with a bad rack and had it go out again 3k later, they replaced it yet again and then I ditched the car. But as dog said, check the junk yards.

Also check insurance salvage yards. Insurance company here sells parts out of wrecked vehicles... they even remove them for you and offer warranty

we got inspection, but if you take it to the right person, a lot of things can pass that shouldn't. My last "inspection" my car wasn't even looked it. he just gave me the sticker. haha

If your going through racks like that..

replace your suspension, struts and shocks.

haha my car barely passed. I hate inspections. I had one of those small brake lights i didnt know existed out, as well as the license plate light. I took it to get inspected when the SES light went off for once. o2 sensor still hates me but after driving 100 miles at 65 mph, it decided to go away temporarily (came back on the next day) sigh.

Anyway try junkyards or salvage yards if you know of any near you...

Yeah I picked up a rack and pinon from a local junkyard for $60 bucks. Hopefully this one will last the life of the car. Though now im just really pissed off at the dealership I bought my car from. When I first bought it I had alot of problems with the car. Now I have had to replace almost everything they already fixed on the car. Next I plan on getting some new struts in the future and hopefully everything will end up ok. I could get my car inspected by my friend but this is a saftey issue and I rather not drive my car around with a bad rack.
