I went to a local body shop to get a price for painting the alero. He looked over the car and said I was going to need a new hood, but he said I should try and get a new hood from GM under warranty. What do you think my chances are to get it?

Also the quote he gave me is a bit too much. They do excellent work, but $4,300 ,f that. I think i'm going to do the body work myself (and yes I experince with body work), and then just get someone to paint it.

does anyone know what the warranty is on the paint/body, isn't it like 7 years?

Corrosion is 36,000m/3years, rust-through is 100,000miles/10 years. Just take it to a dealer (I got mine done at a Chevy dealer) and they should be able to tell if you they can get it done for you. I had to go to a few before I found one that would do it without a deductible.
