How much work/money would it take to switch out my automatic transmission for a manual, my cousin totalled his '04 4-banger alero and im wanting to buy his transmission from him to do a swap, would it fit and would there be any problems like would the transmission be able to handle the extra power and torque?

anything is possible but it hasnt been done yet because it costs so much and requires a lot of fabrication.

I was having this same discussion with a friend... It would probably be easier to swap out the 4 banger with a v6 than to swap the 5spd for auto.

My dad just swapped his firebird to a 5spd....
...from a 4 spd..
...and its a 1969.
lol so basically its 'easy' in old cars.

I'd say no. dont do it. Not that its impossible, its just not worth the money and labor unless its a project car, you know what your doing, and your doing it yourself. To pay someone else to do it.. and get it right? Go buy another car!
not to mention, reprogramming the computer?!?!?

Theres a Jetta around here that the owner tried to swap... Theres always something wrong with it and it cant pass proper inspection.

I dont know anything about the mechanics of this kind of thing.. i did ask my dad once what it would involve to properly swap my alero (out of curiousity) and he went through this whole speech..... all i got out of it is that he could do it, but its just not worth it. He had actually considered it because he hates how the auto shifts or something...

Anyways, we do it all the time in classic cars to make them suitable for highway driving and stuff (4spd > 3 spd, as on this impala we did last...) and just recently a Camaro 5pd in place of stock firebird 4spd... We bought a whole other project car just for the transmission. We usually dont trailer it to shows, its easier to drive...

hope that helps.. its the best ive got....

If your friend is interested in selling the whole car, I'm very interested.

honestly you would be better off selling your car and buying a stick car.

^yes that summed up my whole rant in one sentence.

It would be relatively economical for me to swap, however.. since i can get a compatible 5spd that we probably have laying around rebuilt on the fly.... and my dad is very talented and creative... the fab work wouldnt be too bad.

lol i was considering it when my tranny went (cant be too long... at 105k now...)

why not swap out the airbags while you're at it so if they go off a huge pair of tits pops out to protect you?

i Know some of the 2nd-gen cavalier z24's had 3.1's with a 5 speed. you may be able to swap one of those in.

Hmm, well what type of engine does the car have?
2.2/2.4???
For swapping a F 23 gearbox and you can get all the parts from another alero it wil be prett easey, hmm because I made my ALERO manual but I used the HM 282 gearbox because they suppos to hold more power then the F23.

For how much can you get the car?

Hmmm, I know its a 3400 thread.
Why I'm asking IS because if I'm not mistaking the 2.2 bellhousing will bold on the 3400 enginessssss thats why I'm asking him.

The 5-speed from the '00-'02 2.2 OHV (non-ecotec) cavalier/sunfire will bolt onto the 3400.

It really wouldn't be that hard to make a 5-speed 3400. None of the 3400 owners have enough ambition to do it.

I would totally do that.... if I had a 4 banger, enough money to get a 3400 and do the swap... that would be fairly simple that way because you don't have to go through all the shit of converting an auto to manuel.... all it would be is swapping the engine and sending over the engine programming from one pcm to another.

Other way around however... putting a manny in an auto v6.... way too much work involved, you have to practically gut the car to put everything in.... and your not even assured it'll work in the end either

that's what i was talking about, the auto to manual conversion. I've helped with a few of those swaps. They were originally 3100s too, and also more involved (required welding in new mounts, etc..)
