cleaning an engine...

I've never done it before so I just need a quick rundown on how to do it... Like what all I need, how to do it, what to avoid, that sorta stuff... I don't want to screw it up and screw up my engine... thanks guys and gals!

get some engine gunk................go to a car wash or driveway, leave car running spray the motor down according to the gunk directions and when you spray the motor off with water do not use high pressure but more like a mist to a shower of water keeping the direct shot of water to the air cleaner and ignition system.

scott is pretty much right........ try to avoid getting the coils/electronics wet. but to be honest with you....... i jsut blast the entire motor down. im a professional detailer right now and here is the easiest way....

use "simple green".... or like oldsman said engine gunk but i use simple green........ i just soak the entire bay with it...... i mean EVERYTHING. let it sit for afew minutes...... if there are any thick dirt/grease deposits use a stiff brush or sponge to loosen it. then just hose the mother fucker down.

oh and you should have the engine running the entire time....... after i get done rinsing it off i close the hood and it will "steam" itself dry.

if the engine is running, no.

only concern really, is if you are cleaning with the engine turned OFF, make sure you don't get any liquid (water, simple green, etc) in the alternator.
But if it is turned ON, then you should have no problems.

thee only thing is if you have any any chrome or painted parts under the simple green or gunk it will stain if so dilute the green to 3 to 1 and it should work good

not true........ ive soaked alternators befor without a problem

any ya its a good idea to dilute the simple green if you have painted or chromed parts....... otherwise just shoot it straight

I have CAI under there so I have a chrome peice... thanks for that tip! I'm hopefully going to get this done as soon as it starts warming up... My car is about due for a tune up too so it should all look nice once it's all done.. :D

the story I heard though, was actually on here, I think they turned the engine back on while the alternator was still wet.

i used to hear all kinds of horror stories about cleaning the engine and getting shit wet and the car running weird also........

but after cleaning 100+ engines and soaking them completely and not really using any caution when doing so........ ive never had a problem

Todays enigne are are pretty watertight, I generally only cover the alternaor and a couple of sensors, spray down with an APC or gunk then hose down. Gunk works better if the engine is warm not hot
Then I dress with CD2 or other waterbased dressing.

They used to have it at my auto parts stores around me in the 2 pack cleaner and then dressing, but now its no where to be found. :cry:

i bought 5 of them last year on the net. it can still be found but only on the net. auto zone use to carry it.
