But now the sound is back.
It's only when I brake. Not when I coast to a stop. It's the right rear wheel only. Rotors and pads were replaced, but the noise keeps coming back. "reeeeek... reeeek.... reeeeek."
Yahoo Alero Groups has about 6 people posting the same problem, but no solutions.

Any guesses?

Yeap, I'm hearing it on my 2000 too. Very annoying! I'm hoping that by going with an aftermarket caliper will be the fix. Has anyone had the problem and fixed it with an aftermarket caliper????

Were you experiencing that annoying sound too?

That's not why I changed it. The cylinder was leaking brake fluid. I replaced a hub for annoying noises, but that was constant, not just when stopping. And my snow tires whine on smooth pavement, but once again, not brake related.
So I really have no idea what your problem is. But you can get a caliper for less than $1000.
Maybe make sure your wheels are balanced? Could be rotating funny, or something.

Had the wheels checked for out-of-round and balance - they're fine.
Weird thing is... that it disappears for a week or two at a time and then comes back.

Sounds like the problem I had and now have again on a different wheel. It's definetly the caliper. A guy on this forum told me the piston seal busted on the caliper, so I replaced the caliper and no more brake creak. I'm sure a new caliper will fix your caliper and it should cost you around $100 to buy and you can usually return the busted one and get around $40-$50 back.
The dealer still has my car... The GM tech hotline told them they need to use a 'permanent' type lubricant on the caliper sliders. (sounds like hooey to me.) They have to order the lubricant.
The service manager disagrees with them.... he thinks it's the rear swaybar making noise, which is crap because it only happens when I brake, and it doesn't happen if I come to a stop using the emergency brake, or coasting to a stop, AND it doesn't happen in any other situation.
Might be time to trade the beotch in on a Stratus R/T.
