But now the sound is back.

It's only when I brake. Not when I coast to a stop. It's the right rear wheel only. Rotors and pads were replaced, but the noise keeps coming back. "reeeeek... reeeek.... reeeeek."

Yahoo Alero Groups has about 6 people posting the same problem, but no solutions.

Any guesses?

Yeap, I'm hearing it on my 2000 too. Very annoying! I'm hoping that by going with an aftermarket caliper will be the fix. Has anyone had the problem and fixed it with an aftermarket caliper????

Were you experiencing that annoying sound too?

That's not why I changed it. The cylinder was leaking brake fluid. I replaced a hub for annoying noises, but that was constant, not just when stopping. And my snow tires whine on smooth pavement, but once again, not brake related.

So I really have no idea what your problem is. But you can get a caliper for less than $1000.

Maybe make sure your wheels are balanced? Could be rotating funny, or something.

Had the wheels checked for out-of-round and balance - they're fine.

Weird thing is... that it disappears for a week or two at a time and then comes back.

That was kinda the way mine was doing too but recently its there all the flippin time!

Sounds like the problem I had and now have again on a different wheel. It's definetly the caliper. A guy on this forum told me the piston seal busted on the caliper, so I replaced the caliper and no more brake creak. I'm sure a new caliper will fix your caliper and it should cost you around $100 to buy and you can usually return the busted one and get around $40-$50 back.
The dealer still has my car... The GM tech hotline told them they need to use a 'permanent' type lubricant on the caliper sliders. (sounds like hooey to me.) They have to order the lubricant.

The service manager disagrees with them.... he thinks it's the rear swaybar making noise, which is crap because it only happens when I brake, and it doesn't happen if I come to a stop using the emergency brake, or coasting to a stop, AND it doesn't happen in any other situation.

Might be time to trade the beotch in on a Stratus R/T.
I had the same problem on mine. I found the culpret.....when you remove you pad from you caliper there is a grove it slides in. I looked at the grove and there is a piece of metal there that has been warpped and when I hit my brakes it rubs against the bottom of the pad.....So all I did was take a file and filed that piece down to make it smooth and then no more problem.......

99% of the time you hear the reeeekk is the pads vibrating in the housing....and the "permenant"type lubricant you can get at a parts house....it's described as a brake squeel stopper.....it just keeps the pad from vibrating soo much....it's not a serious problem or sway bar problem it's just annoying and it's caused by not bending the lil aluminum brackets that help hold the pad in the housing....now....you can get a squeeling sound when it is time to change your brakes.....they are called brake warners.....it's a lil metal thingy that rubs the cailpers when your brakes wear down so far....it doesn't hust anything but your ears....i hope that clarifies things for a lot of you...if not....keep asking me

I hear this squeal from the front right wheel...and it's the only wheel that's really damn dirty (looks almost like is got a gun-metal finish). Funky thing is, I only have the squeal when I'm driving in idle. Once I'm going, though, it doesn't squeal. Is this just that vibration thing or is there something else to it? I doubt it's a "warner" because all the parts in that part of the car are brand new OEM parts from July (replaced because of the accident)

I guess I forgot to put the 'finale' on this story...

Took it back to the dealer - and told them I hit the curb - they sent it to the body shop guys.... who found out the knuckle was bent.

They replaced the whole knuckle for $750.00. Problem fixed.

Live and learn.

I had the brake ceek too. But it was caused by warped rotors. I changed those pupies out and the no more ceek.....

im not too how should i say fluent with car terms yet but what is the knuckle, i beat the hell out of my brakes, when driving and not doing anything i can hear a tsst tsst tsst intervulled scraping noise from the front wheels i believe and when coming to a stop from not going very fast my brakes squeel like all hell. i think it also is those metal clippy things in the front but i am confused as to how to file them or what not any more in depth explanation would be appreciated

The "tsst tsst tsst" sounds like warped rotors. The squealing sounds like you need new pads. Plus you said you beat the hell out of your brakes. Do yourself a favor and get new pads and rotors.
