I'm just wondering if anyone has ever tried removing the balance shafts on an Alero to try and get the 15-17 HP it takes from the engine? I know the removal is said to create a rough idle, and I know its been done on quad4forums.com and the j-body sites, but I'm just wondering if it's ever been done on an Alero?

it has not been done.............YET.............hehehe. this one mod mine will have done to it when it comes back out from the full build.
to do the removal though it is a bitch and requires the block to be machined. also some shops won't tackle it.

you have to use a 2.3 oil pump, drill a new hole for oiling system. plug a hole and have the gear changed on the crank and the pad that it mounts too. being the oil pump mounts with the balance shafts also you would need a windage tray and also the oil pan must be extended and re welded for clearance.

well i've got a 2.3 to use for parts too...so this might not be a bad thing for me to look into then

the only thing 2.3 you use is the pump and obvious to use the gasket to see what needs to be done to the block. but when you do it you have to damn careful.

You can't get a set of neutral balance shafts so that you don't have to do all the other modifications?
