View Full Version : What Now?

I'm in the process of finishing up molding my bodykit and will be painting the car soon. I have some questions about where to go from here.

Is it a better idea to...........

A. try and free up all the lost horsepower by getting a better ignition and grounding system, upgrading the fuel system, intake and exhaust

B. saving for a turbo or sc

or C. just finishing up the looks of the car first by getting rims, air ride suspension, struts, sways, and custom interior with sound. Then worry about everything else.

I know this is something that is based on personal preference, I'm just wanting to see what you guys would do if you were where I am now.

well...what do YOU wanna accomplish with the car? now, don't forget it's an alero...you wont' be able to make it move uber fast with air ride and all that stuff...so you can either, finish the kit, drop springs and rims, then go fast parts...or just make it look good

Like you said it's up to you and you're personal preference. But to answer your question on what I would do if I were you, I would get the kit painted, get some rims and drop it with springs instead of air, then turbo it.

Unless doing a turbo or SC, leave the ign alone, GM ign's are really good right out of the factory

i would choose option C. dropping all that money on the engine sometimes just isn't worth it because at the end of the day its still an alero.

paint
intake
exhaust
drop springs
sound
wheels
and go from there.

i'm w/ some others....

finish up the looks... minor engine stuff and leave it at that. regardless of what you do, its still going to be an alero. these are not made to be "go fast" cars. (unless you plan a complete over haul like blackjack is doing)

you, bah.. you'll change your mind.

spilner... he's got the turbo.. but even still.. you turbo most any other car, and it'll be faster then our "grandpa cars"

and yes... i'll admit spy is in the same boat as blackjack. scott and pat... sry... not yet. :P

but what i'm saying is the most any alero has gotten to "currently" is 399hp.

there just isn't enough engine space/tranny strength to handle alot of power. if you want a "go fast" car, there are plenty of others that you can get MUCH higher, and the car is lighter.... (these are termed "deathtraps" in my mind)

i'm not discouraging people like spy, spilner, blackjack, and yourself... just from what i've seen, there are better cars to put engine money into. IMHO

Ditto. As long as you started with looks, finish it off, then do whatever...

Good deal, thanks for all the replies and ideas guys. Ive got about one more day of sanding, then I just need to get the money to shoot the car. After that I will finish the looks on the interior.

On hold for reworked headers. Once they're back again, it's showtime. I'm estimating mid-late June for reassembly.

And 399hp isn't a lot for a FWD street car?? I understand this is your own opinion and I respect that...but you don't need stupid amounts of power to be fast, just the right setup with a decent engine build. Plus, this transmission can take more than people give it credit for, and can be built with stronger parts if you have the budget. And yes there are better/nicer/faster cars to put money into...most of them are more expensive too. Myself, I went to the dealer to buy a Z24 Cavalier I looked at a few times. The day I went to get it, it was sold so I bought this car, it was a nice car I could afford, not thinking I would put any money into it (I mean come on it's a Alero :P)....then I discovered the world of turbos :thumb: and decided since I'm stuck with this car until I pay it off, I might as well make it into something I like.

Plus, the looks people give me when they hear "pssshhhh" come from an Alero is priceless  And I'm not allowed to talk about racing on the street so I'm not going to tell you what I pulled on the other night :thumb:

hahahah, nobody discourages me but.....well, me. Good points.

Now, why the hell would you want to spend the money on a car that's SUPPOSED to be fast. When I see a viper or a vette go by, i think "yup, there goes another one, who cares. Somebody bought their HP....BFD."

Now, when you see a car just totally smoke your ass with something that's not supposed to be all that fast, it makes a bigger impression.

^i agree completely. but all i'm saying is this car has alot more potential to look good, rather then others cars. where others will look ok, but can be built up like crazy.

personally, when i graduate, i plan on having a decent car for driving around in. probably a winter jeep/truck, then a project car. i'll keep the alero around for a while, then get a different car, but still focus on aftermarket. anyone can buy speed/looks. it takes talent to build it.
