hey guys, i got a quick question,

wanting to put in a new muffler or exhaust system but i wanna get my facts right first:

anyone know the Inlet/Outlet size of a stock 3400 V6 exhaust (im thinking its 2" but i wanna double check)? was thinknig about getting a magnaflow muffler. with that i have 2 more questions:
1. would it make a difference if i get a oval or round body?
2. if i were to get a magnaflow for my car with stock pipes, how do u think it would sound? im going for a more low grumble sound rather than a race rocket sound i hear everyday (live right next to a main street, kinda annoying lol)

im going to answer this b4 anyone mentions it.......YES i will be having a WAI with K&N filter before getting a performance muffler

stock pipes on all Aleros are 2 inches.
You have a V6, so it'll be harder for your car to sound ricetastic with a real muffler.

Any other 3400 specific stuff, don't ask me. I only have 4 cylinders on my car. lol

what would ppl say would be good for a decent muffler for my car then? ive read that it will either be Flowmaster or Magnaflow depending on what you want for sound, again, going for a low grumble sound.....since a v6 would be harder make it sound good, just need to be pointed in the right direction, thanks for the info btw :beerchug:

Look around on here. People have sound clips posted on various mufflers. If you want a low throaty tone go with a flowmaster 40s if u want a grumbly sound that u can punch the gas with go with a magnaflow

heh...when the muffler man (lol) put in my exhaust, he had to measure and I saw that my stock pipes were 2 inches even. I SAW IT MYSELF.

*the lol is because Muffler Man is the name of the shop....haha

SLP makes a cat back kit for the Grand Am, but you'll have to have a second cutout on your bumper. (Like me ;) )

Borla makes a simlar kit with a single outlet, but I think it was phased out.

Stop by PFYC.com for a O2 sim before you do a cat-back ;)

I know this is off topic but i was going to get my exhaust done tomorrow (custom 2.5" cat-back w/ Flowmaster 80 Dual Outlet) anyway, ithought that you only needed an O2 Sim if you were replacing the cat with an "offroad pipe?"

IF you relpace the cat with anything other than stock, you need a Sim

okay i guess i typed wrong i am getting everything from the cat-back replaced. The CAT is not getting replaced, so do i still need a Sim ??

Actually you are all wrong, stock piping is 2.25"

Yep... and what's wrong with just making your own?

Good luck with the exhaust though, hope you enjoy the new sound/performance. And be sure to post a pic or two as well.

stock piping on a GAGT is 2.25", this is an alero forum. step away....

i swear the stock pipe was 1.75". cause the exhaust inlet was 2" on the stock muffler.

just went out to the shed and measured the stocker.....

2.0" on my original pipes.

So now we have 1.75, 2.0, 2.25, etc....

Think there was different diameter on different years/models?

doubtfull, probably just different diameter for different engines.

doesn't make sense (to me anyway) that they would use a smaller pipe for a bigger engine...

well look at it this way. when they made the 3400, they werent even trying, no 24 valves no dual or quad cams, no light weight internals, nothing. the motor makes half the output of its size. Pathetic motor imo, just like alot of thier v6's and 4 cylinders. (no offence to anyone)

and people wonder why GM is going bankrupt and less and less people are buying thier cars.

Yes, all the piping on the exhasut is 1.75" and 2" on the muffler

hmm...mine was 2.25"

I had a Magnaflow setup with stock pipes and a WAI at one point. Very nice sound to it. You'll like it. not rice at all..very deep. Even had some car alarms go off (granted it was in the parking garage when that happened haha)

now i had some custom pipes when i got rid of the resonator and have a cold air intake from Doctor Speed. andd yeah it sounds really good this way too haha. hope this helps ya.

just something to keep in mind, a custom catback which is what i did essentially when i got my pipes included with the price of the muffler is like 300 total. then figure install and tips so like 425-450ish. If you just get a muffler and tips with install your looking like 300ish. So just keep that in mind because the borla is very pricey as well as that slp. all of them are solid though.

From when I did my piping, after the cat, I had 2.0", and that continued right into the muffler... when I still used one...

Satsuriku

ok so i figured it out for sure, it is in fact 2"

heres another question,

the muffler im eyeing out (magnaflow part# 14827) but heres the thing, the smallest inlet size is 2.25", is there a way i can have it connect to my 2" outlet? i was thinking if i had a little attachment to the pipe that fits my 2" then expands out to fit the 2.25" to make it fit with that exhaust.

if anyone knows of a better way other than putting in new pipes to fit it, let me know.

I have the 2.4 w/ Pacesetter header connected to custom 2.5inch pipe with that has a 2.5 in and out high flow cat with no o2 sim. I ran it like that for over a year with no codes. The second o2 is just there to see if the cat is doing its job.

Hey guys......umm, still have a question mark around this issue. Let me know if you guys think/know of a good way other than replacing the entire system, thank you ^_^ :thumb:

of course they can make that fit. all they do is start with a smaller pipe, heat up the end and stretch it out a bit. any muffler man can do that.

My stock piping was 2 1/4"...........Get SLP it's the best by far...there is nothing else that can touch it (performance wise and quality)

derek_ski99
02-28-2006, 09:27 PM
thats not true haha.. yeah the slp is good but there are plenty of good exhaust setups you can go with. and they will all be good for about the same performance numbers

If your gonna get an exhaust system, get SLP. Otherwise go to a shop and tell them you want 2.5" piping from your cat to a flowmaster or magnaflow muffler.
