About a week ago, I just installed an AEM wai. Last saturday I changed my fuel filter and filled up my tank completely. Once i got home I put some of the Lucas fuel injector cleaner in. From that time till now, I put about 140 miles on it. I am now down to a little above a quarter tank. My gas seems to be dropping so quickly, and its really tourqing me off. :pissed: :shout: Is there anything that I need to change or get to solve this problem? My alero is a 2.4, and it has around 82500 miles on it.........

Is your mass air flow plugged in? Maybe your maf is bad.

Is your ets not working & (or) do you have a check engine light on?

doubtful since the 2.4s do not have those

you have a fuel leak (maybe a connector is not on the filter tight)? or leave it warm up for about an hour before you go places? That is crazy bad milage, about 1/2 of what I get in town. I would double check the connections on the fuel filter.

I'll get that checked tomorrow, I know this is terrible.

definately check the fuel filter. have you ever changed it?

Well i got the car when it had 75000 miles on it. I just changed the fuel filter last saturday. I changed it because of the bad gas mileage I was getting in the past 2 months. Now I am getting the same horrible mileage as I was before, if not worse. In fact yesterday I checked under my hood, and my intake piping was wiggling a lot more than it was before. Im going to fix that today and check on the fuel filter for any leaks. I hope I can find out whats going on with this. I was thinking about getting a new spark plug and/or cleaning out my throttle body..... would these work?

Try some seafoam ;) Might want to do a compression test. Also may want to have your injectors checked to make sure they are not leaking. Throwing any codes?

Duh, I should try reading the original post lol.

When i bought the fuel filter, it came with some kind of a plastic piece that went over the one end..... my uncle then put the new filter in and took off that plastic piece...... does anyone know what i'm talking about? and if so, would that be a possible cause?

hows your oil?

battistoni21
02-18-2006, 04:40 PM
My check engine light is not on, the oil was changed right before x-mas, and i put only about 1500 miles on it from then...... the change oil light isn't on either......

I used seafoam in my car last night and my gas is still running horribly...... could it possibly be that my fuel pressure regulator was installed incorrectly? I had in installed about a month ago. And my gas hasn't gotten any better.... if anything worse. I can't see any leaks or smell any gas at all.

Also, where can I go to get my injectors checked for leaks? Any repair shop? or autozone or soemthing like that? I asked advanced auto if they could do a test for me, and they said that it would be useless because that only throws up electrical codes.......

Darn, I keep forgetting to add this in on my other posts....... I havent gotten my wheels rotated since I got the car(75000 when i got it, it now has 82000). Would that be a possibility of the gas problem? I also found out in december that my left front HUB assembly had "excessive play"(according to arnold palmer motors). Would that also be the one of the reasons?

Take a look at the fuel filter while the car is running and the system is under pressure to see if any fuel is leaking out. I recall that plastic piece and think it is supposed to be on there. I only get right at 250 miles a tank my self which is about 21-22 mpg. Good luck! ;)

battistoni21

Thanks dbailey, i hope this was the problem.......i'll get to it tonight.

battistoni21
02-23-2006, 12:50 PM
I asked my uncle if he put that connector on, and he said he just used the one from the previous filter....... :( is there anything else that I should get checked before I just take it to the dealership and ask them? I really dont want to spend alot of money just for them to take a look at my car for something that I can have done cheaper some place else........

Would changing fuels work? as in instead of getting 87, would 89 do anything?

The octane grade is not going to impact your mileage like that. I was told by the place that services my tranny that when it starts going bad, the gas mileage will start to drop. Guys? Has anyone else heard this to be the case? :o

more than likely a leaky injector is going to throw a running rich code. Rotating you tires should not that have that radically of effect on milage, check the pressure in the tires though. Octane is also not goint to affect your milage that much. Try checking the filter running like posted prev.

heres a story im just sooo HAPPY about....... this past saturday, i left my house, and i only drove about 40 miles.... when i left, my fuel gauge was at half, and when i got home, it was a tiny bit above a quarter tank :Noooo: :shout: i just love how my gas is and the raise of fuel prices :pissed: :pissed: :pissed: i'm going to have my injectors checked either tomorrow or thursday....... i think it has to be these things. I changed the oil, used seafoam, anndd much injector cleaning fluid(lucas). I know that my wai with nothing else done to the engine is not helping, but it shouldn't effect my gas this much. Today im going to check under the car while its running after school......

well i changed my spark plugs on saturday and found out that with (83500 miles) the original spark plugs were never changed..... thank god i changed them.... im at a quarter tank now.... im gonna see how many more miles i get with these plugs.... i put NGK iridium IX's in...... hopefully i get better mileage with these.... they cost me like $30 bucks!

that sucks man...mine started doin that..started with about 380miles toa tank, down to under 250miles to a tank...

changed hubs(they were bad) gained 60 miles to a tank

changing air filter on short ram intake, and it should help me out, i'll know more in next couple days...

if you run premium gas you get better milage... mailny becasue they don't water it down with ethanol... ive heard it to be just about the same money to run premuim versus regular becasue the gas milage with 10% ethanol is so terrible... i've yet to try it... but consider it. also keep your tires inflated... blower fan and AC off as much as possible... and keep your windows rolled up... clean air filter you did... oil change you did... spark plugs you did :thumb: ... spark plug wires/coil pack may help... fuel filter you did... that's about it... if your still arent happy go buy a ford escape... lol

battistoni21
04-03-2006, 12:13 PM
lol yeah right ford escapes look like crap...... i do run 93 all the time now...... what do you mean by the blower fan..... i dont have my heat on or antyhing, i always leave that stuff off.... is that what you meant? and where could i get new spark plug wires and a new coil pack?

thanks 2000 olds.... i think i should get working on my hubs soon.....

if they're not makin noise yet and not throwing a code i wouldnt worry about it just yet...but it is something to keep in mind

Not sure what that piece is without seeing it, but sounds like possibly a check-valve, which would not hurt your mileage that I'm aware of. If that's what it actually is, all it would do is keep the gas from "back-flow" to your tank when your fuel pump isn't running (engine is off) that way it doesn't have to re-prime the fuel line after turning it back on.

the plastic piece is the line lock, to lock the line on the filter, i get one every time i purchase a fram fuel filter, but i just use the oem one.

my mileage just jumped from 19 to 21, after i installed an o2 sim, in my rear bank. i was astonished to get 285 miles out of a tank of gas in the city, normally its 250ish.

battistoni21
04-04-2006, 10:01 AM
damn...... well im at 210 right now, and i have a tiny bit under 1/4 tank..... is that o2 sim for the v6 the same for the 4 cylinder?

Still not fixed ? Maybe go to the dealership and ask them to check it out for you.

battistoni21
04-04-2006, 10:08 PM
im thinkin about it, but screw the place where i got it..... they are a waste of time and money, my fuel regulator was leaking and i took it to them twice..... they said they couldnt find anything wrong with it, and then when i took it to another place, they couldn't believe that the dealership couldn't fix it.... i heard of a couple good places around my place, im gonna go there once i get some funds

Im gettin the same milage, but i have a 3400. Go get it fixed and let me know. Stupid question, but what are hub's?

freakout
04-05-2006, 10:06 PM
The front hub (wheel bearing) might be adding to the rolling resistance of the car. The 02 sensor sim don't know if you need that but a bad/dirty 02 sensor could mess up mileage. It might not throw a code , just not reading quite right. Does it come fully up to temperature. If it doesn't the computer will run it in choke mode (rich). I haven't had this problem in my Alero, but my p/u is hard on thermastats for some reason. Tire pressure makes a big difference as well.
